The irony of starting a blog in the era of 30-second reels
In a world of hyper-visual, bite-sized communication—where stories disappear in 24 hours and attention spans flicker between TikToks and Reels—you might wonder: why launch a blog in 2025?
Fair question. And here’s our honest answer: because some conversations deserve more than 15 seconds.
We believe the topics we care about—packaging sustainability, material innovation, environmental impact—are too complex, too nuanced, and frankly, too important to be reduced to a slogan or a swipe. So, while we’ll still show up in the fast lanes of digital media, we’ve decided to take a slower road. A more reflective one. One where we can explain, explore, and sometimes even question ourselves.
That’s why this space exists. Once a month, we’ll share what’s on our mind—from scientific insights to market shifts, project learnings to philosophical contradictions. Not to sell you something. But to start a conversation that’s worth having.
Why we felt the need for this space
At Flo Group, we’ve spent over a decade developing KeyGea—a fully compostable pod for single-serve coffee. It wasn’t just a technical journey, but a values-driven one. Along the way, we met engineers, scientists, roasters, retailers, and activists. And what we discovered is this: everyone has something to say about sustainability, but not everyone has a space to say it well.
Blogs may seem “retro,” but we see them differently. They’re one of the few formats left that allow for depth without distraction. A place where we can share what we’ve learned and hear back from a community that’s just as passionate about doing things better.
More than ever, we need real dialogue between industries, across supply chains, and especially between producers and consumers. Because packaging is no longer just a technical choice. It’s a moral one, a business one, and increasingly, a cultural one.
The problem with how we talk about sustainability
Let’s be honest: “sustainability” has become a buzzword.
It’s on every label, every investor deck, every press release. But when everything is sustainable, nothing really is. The danger of overuse is dilution, and that’s exactly what we want to push back against.
We want to bring clarity back to the conversation. We want to look at lifecycle data, dive into certification schemes, question assumptions, and examine tradeoffs—not to win an argument, but to improve a system. Because sustainability isn’t a label. It’s a process. A messy, sometimes contradictory process that requires critical thinking and collaboration.
That’s what this blog aims to offer: a space to talk about what sustainability actually looks like—on the factory floor, in procurement meetings, in consumer feedback loops, and in our own internal debates.
What to expect from us
You can expect one post per month. Nothing spammy, nothing superficial.
Sometimes we’ll write about the technical side of compostable materials. Sometimes we’ll unpack consumer trends or regulatory shifts. Other times, we’ll share behind-the-scenes reflections from our R&D team or stories from our partners in the field. But always with the same goal: to invite you in—not just to what we do, but why we do it.
We promise transparency over polish, insight over perfection, and questions over certainties. Because that’s what we believe this space needs more of.
Let’s co-create the future of sustainable packaging
This blog isn’t just about KeyGea. It’s about a broader ambition: to bring together people who care—whether you’re a roaster testing compostable lines, a co-packer navigating new machinery, a sustainability officer trying to interpret policy, or a consumer who just wants to know if their morning brew makes a difference.
We believe change doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens in dialogue. It happens when people with different roles but shared intentions come together and ask, what could we do differently?
So here’s our ask: stick around. Read, reflect, reply. Tell us what you’d like us to write about. Disagree with us when it makes sense. Help us make this blog a real meeting point for ideas.
And if you want to stay in the loop, consider subscribing to our monthly Field Notes—a short, curated email with each new post and a few extras we only share with our close circle. No fluff, no noise, just thoughtful content.
Welcome to the KeyGea Journal
Thank you for reading this first post. We’re excited (and maybe a little nervous) to share this journey with you. We believe there’s still room for long-form thinking, for professional honesty, and for real conversations in an industry that often moves fast and speaks loud.
We’re glad you’re here.
See you next month.
